Uncovering tunxis history

TheTunxis Tribe, an Indigenous people's tribe whose history took place in central Connecticut, particularly the Farmington River Valley.

The Tunxis tribe, a part of the larger Algonquian speaking cultural group, called this region home for centuries. Their name itself is believed to mean "the point where the river bends," as there is a relationship with the Farmington River. Long before European settlers arrived, the Tunxis people lived in what is now Farmington, Hartford, West Hartford, New Britain, along with much of central Connecticut area.

History 

The arrival of European colonization brought devastating changes. It started with a smallpox epidemic that swept through the region, killing many of the Natives. Then came skirmishes with other tribes, Encroachment on the Tunxis landholdings by English colonists. Over time, the Tunxis had become largely Christianized and sold parts of their remaining land to settle debts. As more and more European settlers crowded into Farmington, the idea of moving away to secure more land and the company of more people like themselves held more appeal. Causing a extection of there cultrue.
